A student portfolio is a compilation of academic work and other forms of educational evidence assembled for the purpose of (1) evaluating coursework quality, learning progress, and academic achievement; (2) determining whether students have met learning standards or other academic requirements for courses, grade-level promotion, and graduation; (3) helping students reflect on their academic goals and progress as learners; and (4) creating a lasting archive of academic work products, accomplishments, and other documentation. Advocates of student portfolios argue that compiling, reviewing, and evaluating student work over time can provide a richer, deeper, and more accurate picture of what students have learned and are able to do than more traditional measures—such as standardized tests, quizzes, or final exams—that only measure what students know at a specific point in time.

Every practicum experience is guided by three participants: (1) the Student Teacher, (2) the Cooperating Teacher, and (3) the College/University Supervisor. What happens in the classroom and how it is interpreted will depend on the views of each member of the triad. It is important to negotiate common expectations for roles and responsibilities. If expectations are clear and understood by each member, the experience is more likely to be satisfactory for all. Student Teachers should take ownership of their own learning and at the same time receive consistent feedback and daily mentoring from their Cooperating Teachers at the school. The approaches for teaching can be broadly classified into teacher centered and student centered. In Teacher-Centered Approach to  Learning , Teachers are the main  authority figure in this model. Students are viewed as “empty vessels” whose primary role is to passively receive  information  (via lectures and direct instruction) with an end goal of testing and assessment. It is the primary role of teachers to pass  knowledge  and  information  onto their students. In this model, teaching and assessment are viewed as two separate entities.
